FNR Cross Regional Hymenachne Management Project

This Cross Regional Project aims to improve control of Hymenachne (and other aquatic weeds at the sites) in the northern coastal areas of the Burdekin Dry Tropics (BDT) region (primarily Thuringowa Shire) up into the Terrain Natural Resource Management (Terrain) Lower Herbert catchment to the Cardwell Range areas. The project will include, not only on-ground control but development of a comprehensive control strategy, incorporating improved infestation mapping, and enhanced institutional integration between State Government Departments, Local Governments, industry and landholders.

Hymenachne is a declared Class 2 weed under the Queensland Land Protection Act and a Category 1 weed in FNQ’s Regional Pest Management Plan and is a threat to the areas within the scope of this project.  The local government Pest Management Plans includes eradication of Hymenachne particularly in environmentally sensitive areas.  Coordination is needed across the two NRM regions for management and control to focus effort on Hymenachne as it is the major production and environmental weed that can be contained and systematically removed.  Other aquatic weeds like Salvinia, Water Hyacinth, Water Lettuce & Pond Apple occur in locations with Hymenachne and will need to be considered concurrently.
